feTrading Suddenly Halts On Floor Of New York Stock Exchange Due To “Technical Issue” [Update]

1 1 1 1 1 The New York Stock Exchange suddenly halted trading at about a quartern to noon, Eastern Time today. UPDATE: The NYSE has confirmed it’s experiencing a “technical issue.”

“We’re currently experiencing a technical issue that we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible. We will be providing further updates as soon as we can, and are doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution, communicate thoroughly and transparently, and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open,” the NYSE said.

The Department of Homeland Security also told CNN (link has video that autoplays) in a statement that there are no signs of malicious activity.

A post on the NYSE status page simply reads: “NYSE/NYSE MKT has temporarily suspended trading in all symbols. All open orders will be cancelled. Additional information will follow as soon as possible.”

Reuters reports that Intercontinental Exchange Inc’s NYSE Group, which includes the New York Stock Exchange, said it temporarily suspended trading in all of securities on its exchanges following earlier reports of technical difficulties.

The director of floor operations at the NYSE also said there were issues earlier today.

“It’s been a little bit of a bumpy day. We had some technical problems even before the opening,” he told CNBC (link has video that autoplays).

This means if you submitted an order today, it’ll likely remain in limbo until the trading begins again, he told CNBC during a newscast, though the NYSE should otherwise remain unaffected at that point.

Bloomberg reports that SEC spokesman Kevin Callahan declined to comment on the halt, and a NYSE spokeswoman had yet to reply to a request for comment.

We’ll continue to update this post as information becomes available.

In light of this morning’s United Airlines computer outage, Twitter is already having fun with this one, including NYSE’s competitors:

WSJ.com is also delivering a 504, Twitter was quick to note, perhaps as people rush over there to get the scoop on the NYSE:
